Why the Yankees and Angels Will Meet in the ALCS

By Bart Grossman

I anticipate a potential American League Championship Series battle with the Angels exactly the same way I look forward to turning 40 and having my wife tell me I need a fully-invasive prostate exam.

To explain, I fear the future worse than Chris Russo.

The Yankees beat the Angels at their own game on Monday in New York, producing the go-ahead run thanks to the infinitely important Brett Gardner and a helping hand from Chone Figgins, who was more skittish at 3rd than Tom Brady in the pocket against Buffalo.

The final tally read 5-3, allowing New York to ascend its lead over the Angels of California to 6 games in the battle for home field advantage in the playoffs. It was a key victory for the Yankees, although the context of the matchup was perhaps even more prominent.

A playoff meeting between these two organizations might be a bloodbath.

I understand, there's that entire issue of the division series to be fought out. The Yankees will need to survive Detroit and LA and must figure out a way to defeat the Red Sox, a team that always seems to bury them. But in a year where the Yankees have secured the designated title as "The Team To Beat", it is impossible to not think about LA bigger picture.

The Angels' roster is filled with athletes that scare me. Figgins, Torii Hunter, Kendry Morales, and that's right, Bobby Abreu, comprise the heart of a deep lineup that mirrors the patience of the Yankees' order.

Predict a series between these two franchises to go to seven games or close to it. Expect a series where a 3-run margin of victory is deemed a thrashing.

What I am trying to say is, expect a series where you'll need to imbibe plenty of fluids...and I don't mean water. - 30247
